Wood is cherished in harsh enviroments such as the Sahel and the Sahara Desert. It is used in a number of utensils from bowls to camel saddles. A variety of poles is used in the tents -jaima- as mat supports, as hangers for bags, etc. They are often richly decorated and they may then turn into symbols of status. This particular piece is called -ame ssaqqab-. It is used inside the -jaima- and, four of them, are used to set a sort of litter on a camel. Original repairs. Attractive patina, beatifully carved and minutely engraved.

The Bozo people are mostly fishermen inhabiting the banks of the Niger river and who have managed to keep alive their wonderful and rich traditions. A superb antique and huge main beam of a Berber traditional tent or jaima from the tribe of the Zaïane. Made out of a single piece of solid cedarwood and featuring most interesting carved Berber decorative motifs meant to protect its dwellers from dangers such as the evil eye. Of a curved shape it would be supported on two pillars inserted in holes for that particular purpose in the beam to form the highest point of the tent. The whole structure would be then covered by a large piece of cloth made of different patches of flatwoven wool textiles and, in some occasions, leather. Charmingly obscured by smoke from the family fire. An extremely interesting piece, authentic, rare, enormously decorative and with a most appealing and undeniable tribal character. A piece not to be missed.

An old carved wood chest from Tahzout in the region of Al Hoceïma on the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. Its carved decoration shows a serie of arches that represent the mihrab of mosques and also, according to many scholars, are a representation of the ancient Carthaginian goddess Tanit, as well as geometrical typical Berber polychrome ornamentation. However not all its panels are decorated as it was common to decorate only those parts exposed. These pieces of furniture or -sunduk- were used to keep valuables belongings such as jewellery, glass, cosmetics, etc.
Small size. It presents some minor reparation.
